Book
The Winter King
First published 1995
Derfel Cadarn, raised in Merlin’s household, remembers Britain after the death of Uther Pendragon. The throne of Dumnonia passes to the infant Mordred, and Arthur returns from exile as one of the child’s protectors. Rival kings, internal feuds and Saxon armies threaten the kingdom, while Arthur’s marriage plans are overturned by his love for Guinevere. Derfel becomes a warrior in Arthur’s service and witnesses his attempt to forge alliances among the Britons, oppose King Gorfyddyd and keep Mordred’s inheritance intact. The struggle culminates in a battle that gives Arthur the authority to impose an uneasy peace, but also creates enemies who will continue to challenge him.
