Blood of the Bear
First published 2024
AD 781. Saxony remains under the Christian rule of Charlemagne, and refusal of baptism or church taxation is answered with execution. Widukind has taken refuge in the North and seeks the help of Bjarki Bloodhand, once a feared berserker but now attempting to live as a husband and father after eloping with Widukind’s sister Edith.
Bjarki’s private life is threatened by Abbio the Crow, Edith’s former betrothed, and by the renewed call to rebellion. Tor is also drawn back into the struggle as Saxon resistance moves towards another decisive confrontation with the Franks. The concluding volume asks whether Bjarki can call upon the bear spirit without sacrificing the family and self-command he has fought to build.
