Justinian’s Gothic War

535–554 CE

Belisarius invaded Sicily and Italy, captured Naples and Rome and endured a long Gothic siege of the capital. He later entered Ravenna after negotiations with Ostrogothic leaders.

The war resumed after Belisarius left Italy and devastated the peninsula before Narses defeated the remaining Gothic armies. Political rivalry and shortages repeatedly limited Roman operations.

Count Belisarius follows the sieges, negotiations and court suspicions that turned the Italian campaign into the central trial of the general's career.
