In 551, the Romans have almost regained their homeland. Led by Belisarius, their all-conquering general, Roman armies have won victory after victory in Italy. Now they must march upon the capital of the Goths at Ravenna. Coel ap Amhar, now a veteran officer, is one of the few men Belisarius can trust. He carries his famous sword, once wielded by Julius Caesar, in the final engagements to conquer the Italian mainland. Yet there is more to winning a war than battles. Undermined by enemies in Constantinople, Belisarius suffers betrayal. Coel is dragged with him into the melting pot of treachery and politics, until a final devastating blow almost destroys his loyalty to the empire.
