Wolves Around the Throne
Normandy, AD 1044. The Wolves escort Beatrix de Hauteville to a marriage intended to calm conflict around the young and illegitimate Duke William. Her brother Serlo opposes the political settlement, and the union places the travelling war-band between families with armed followers and long memories.
Halfdan must navigate aristocratic feuds in which hospitality, marriage and hostage-taking are tools of power. The Wolves’ reputation makes them useful but also marks them as outsiders who can be blamed when negotiation fails. Their mission reveals the insecure foundations of William’s future conquest long before he becomes king of England.
