Rise of Normandy and the Duchy of Normandy

911–1066

Normandy emerged after Viking leaders established power in the lower Seine region and entered into agreements with Frankish rulers. The descendants of these settlers adapted to Frankish aristocratic, Christian and military structures while preserving a memory of Scandinavian origins.

By the eleventh century the duchy had become one of the most dynamic political powers in western Europe. Norman rulers and adventurers operated in France, England, southern Italy and the Mediterranean.
