Edgar Ætheling

Edgar Ætheling was the last male member of the royal house of Wessex with a strong hereditary claim to the English throne. After Harold Godwinson’s death in 1066, he was briefly proclaimed king but was never crowned.

Edgar submitted to William the Conqueror, later joined rebellions and spent years moving among the courts of England, Scotland and continental Europe. His life represents the survival, but political failure, of the old English royal dynasty after the Norman Conquest.
