Battle of Stamford Bridge
1066 CE
The Battle of Stamford Bridge was fought in September 1066 between Harold Godwinson and the invading Norwegian king Harald Hardrada, supported by Tostig Godwinson. Harold’s rapid march north ended the invasion and killed both Hardrada and Tostig. The victory came only weeks before William of Normandy landed in the south.
The battle matters because it exhausted English forces at the worst possible moment. Harold won a brilliant victory, but then had to turn south for another decisive confrontation. Stamford Bridge is often treated as the end of the Viking Age in England and the prelude to Norman rule.
