Hispania and Rome, 72–69 BCE. The death of Quintus Sertorius does not immediately end the networks, grudges and displaced soldiers created by his long resistance to Sulla’s regime. A younger generation of Roman officers encounters the aftershocks of a war in which allegiance often depended more on commanders and survival than constitutional principle.
The prequel follows men who will later serve in Caesar’s campaigns as they learn the habits of irregular warfare and political suspicion. Sertorius remains a powerful absence: betrayed and killed, yet capable of shaping events through veterans who refuse to forget him. The story establishes the personal histories beneath the loyalties of Marius’ Mules.
