Aftermath of the Sertorian War

Quintus Sertorius was assassinated in 72 BC after sustaining a long independent resistance in Hispania against the Sullan regime. His death weakened the coalition immediately, but veterans, local alliances and political grievances created during the conflict did not disappear at once.

Pompey and Metellus completed the military settlement while Rome attempted to reintegrate communities and soldiers whose loyalties had been shaped by years of irregular war. The period forms an important background to the generation of officers who later served in Caesar’s campaigns.
