Aftermath of the Sertorian War, 72–69 BCE

Quintus Sertorius was assassinated in 72 BC after sustaining a long independent resistance in Hispania against the Sullan regime. His death weakened the coalition immediately, but veterans, local alliances and political grievances created during the conflict did not disappear at once.

Pompey and Metellus completed the military settlement while Rome attempted to reintegrate communities and soldiers whose loyalties had been shaped by years of irregular war. The period forms an important background to the generation of officers who later served in Caesar’s campaigns.

In historical fiction, the aftermath supports stories about defeated networks, betrayal, amnesty and the transfer of frontier experience into later Roman wars. Marius’ Mules -V: Sertorius’ Ghost uses the continuing influence of Sertorius after his death.
