Aquitania and northern Spain, 50 BCE. Although Caesar declares Gaul conquered, an uprising in the mountainous south drives out Roman occupiers and threatens the appearance of peace. The exiled Fronto seeks his former commander and accepts leadership of an unusual force as part of a bargain to restore the fortunes of his family.
The campaign against communities largely untouched by the great revolt forces Fronto to confront enemies and memories he believed buried. Galronus and the veterans march into terrain that favours ambush and local knowledge, while events in Rome narrow Caesar’s political options. The war for Gaul is officially over, but neither province nor commander can escape its consequences.
