The enslaved twins Romulus and Fabiola are separated when Romulus is sold to a gladiator school and Fabiola to a brothel. Romulus comes under the protection of the Gallic gladiator Brennus and meets Tarquinius, an Etruscan warrior and seer. The three men are forced into Crassus’s army and march east, where the Roman invasion of Parthia ends in disaster and the survivors are taken far beyond Rome’s frontier.

Romulus, Brennus and Tarquinius serve their Parthian captors in Margiana and fight to survive attacks from the steppe. In Italy, Fabiola escapes a slave-catcher and seeks protection from Brutus while Rome moves towards civil war. Romulus and Tarquinius eventually return west, enter Caesar’s legions and fight in Egypt and Asia Minor. Their paths converge again in Rome as Caesar’s enemies prepare to strike on the Ides of March.
