Romulus and Fabiola are twins born into slavery and separated when they are sold at thirteen. Romulus is sent to a gladiator school, where the famous Gallic fighter Brennus protects and trains him. Fabiola is forced into a brothel and attracts the attention of Brutus, giving her access to the dangerous world of Roman politics.

Romulus and Brennus meet Tarquinius, an Etruscan warrior and seer, and all three are forced into the army raised by Marcus Licinius Crassus for the invasion of Parthia. They march east with the legions towards Carrhae, where the campaign ends in catastrophe. The survivors are captured and driven far beyond Rome’s borders, while Fabiola remains in the capital searching for a way to secure her own freedom and find her brother.
