In 213 BC, the Roman army besieges Syracuse, whose walls and machines have been strengthened by Archimedes. Quintus serves among the attackers and faces danger from rival Romans as well as from the defenders holding the city.

Hanno has been sent by Hannibal to help Syracuse resist the siege. Inside the city he discovers that Aurelia, Quintus’s sister, is being held captive.
