Camul and Acco are young Gallic nobles whose encounter with a sacred bear leaves Acco convinced that a goddess has cursed him. They leave their Pyrenean homeland and join Roman forces, first serving in the military world created by Julius Caesar’s conquest of Gaul and then entering the household of Publius Crassus.

Their service carries them through Rome, Greece and Syria before Marcus Crassus launches his invasion of Parthia. Camul watches ambition and poor intelligence draw the Roman army into the disaster at Carrhae, where Parthian horse archers destroy the legions and the survivors face captivity far beyond the eastern frontier.
