Bohemond begins as the formidable but land-poor son of the Norman conqueror Robert Guiscard. After campaigns in southern Italy and the Balkans, he joins the First Crusade, recognising that the expedition offers both religious purpose and the chance to secure a principality of his own.
His military skill helps the crusaders survive their march across Anatolia and the long siege of Antioch, but victory intensifies his rivalry with the Byzantine emperor Alexios and with the other crusading princes. The novel follows Bohemond’s combination of courage, calculation and opportunism as he turns a fragile conquest into the Norman principality of Antioch.
