During the First Crusade’s prolonged siege of Antioch, Demetrios Askiates serves with the Byzantine contingent while hunger, disease and desertion erode the crusading army. When a Norman knight is found murdered, Bohemond orders Demetrios to investigate, suspecting that the killing may be connected to the rivalry between the Norman and Provençal factions.

The inquiry draws Demetrios through a camp divided by language, faith and competing claims to command. As the crusaders struggle to breach Antioch’s walls and reports spread of a relief army approaching from the east, the murder threatens to ignite violence within their own ranks. Solving it becomes inseparable from the political contest over who will control the city if the siege succeeds.
