Knight with Armour

by Alfred Duggan

First published 1950

3.3(37)

Roger FitzOsbert is a poor and inexperienced Norman knight with little prospect of land at home. He takes the cross and enters the service of Robert Curthose, joining the First Crusade on its long march through Europe and Anatolia toward Jerusalem.

Hunger, disease, factional rivalry and the siege of Antioch dismantle Roger’s courtly idea of warfare. A difficult marriage and the demands of feudal loyalty further complicate his pilgrimage, leaving him to decide what honour and religious duty mean when the crusading army finally reaches the walls of Jerusalem in 1099.
