The Sword of Cnut
Sven Saxon Sword believes that helping Cnut win the English crown has earned him the right to withdraw to his own riverside lordship. Peace proves temporary. Norse raiders threaten his home, while Cnut’s wider ambitions draw Sven into a Scandinavian war in which the king must protect power on both sides of the North Sea.
The oath bound to Sven’s sword makes royal service difficult to refuse. He is pulled from local responsibility into conflict with Swedish enemies and rival Norse interests, forcing him to balance duty to Cnut against the safety of the people who now depend on him as a lord. The novel treats kingship and oath-taking as obligations that continue long after a battlefield victory appears to have settled the succession.
