Death of a Kingdom
England, 1004. The kingdom is fractured by Viking invasion and the increasing influence of Eadric Streona over King Æthelred. Sweyn Forkbeard expands his ambitions while Thorkell the Tall leads a formidable army against the English. Beornoth, older and burdened by years of war, is drawn into a final defence of a realm whose rulers and commanders can no longer agree on how it should be saved.
The crisis is as much political as military. Æthelred’s court is weakened by mistrust and divided leadership while Viking commanders exploit the kingdom’s inability to coordinate defence. Beornoth has spent his life fighting for England, but experience offers little comfort when those above him cannot agree on strategy. The novel places an ageing warrior inside the final erosion of Æthelred’s authority.
