The Evening and the Morning
First published 2020
In 997, a Viking raid destroys the coastal home of Edgar, a gifted young boatbuilder, forcing his family to begin again at the impoverished settlement of Dreng’s Ferry. Edgar’s practical intelligence brings him into conflict with the bishop Wynstan, whose family controls local justice and wealth. The Norman noblewoman Ragna arrives through marriage, while the monk Aldred attempts to build a centre of learning and honest administration.
Their alliances develop during the unstable final decades of Anglo-Saxon England, when Danish attacks, slavery, clerical corruption and weak royal authority shape everyday life. Bridges, mills, churches and legal institutions gradually transform the settlement, establishing the material and moral foundations of the later town of Kingsbridge.
