In 1942, German agent Alex Wolff crosses the desert into Cairo and begins transmitting British military information to Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. Using a code based on Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, he exploits old contacts and the divided society of wartime Egypt while the Axis advance threatens the British position in North Africa.
British intelligence officer William Vandam is assigned to identify the source of the leaks and recruits Elene Fontana to enter Wolff’s social world. Their pursuit becomes a contest of surveillance, deception and personal risk whose outcome is tied to the campaign that culminates at El Alamein.
