Killing Rommel

R. Lawrence Chapman leaves civilian life to serve as a British officer during the Second World War and is eventually recruited into the Long Range Desert Group. Operating far behind Axis lines during the North African fighting, he learns the specialised demands of desert navigation, reconnaissance and irregular warfare while participating in raids against Rommel's Afrika Korps.

Against the background of the Second Battle of El Alamein, Chapman's unit is assigned a mission to locate and kill the German commander whose reputation has become central to Axis morale. Told as a soldier's memoir, the novel examines the discipline, fear and moral burden of men required to carry out a dangerous operation with little prospect of rescue.
