Last of the Amazons

by Steven Pressfield

4.0(582)

In the mythic world of Mycenaean Greece, a generation before the Trojan War, Theseus travels beyond the Greek world and returns with the Amazon warrior Antiope. His actions draw Athens into conflict with a society of mounted women from the Black Sea steppes, and the story is narrated through women whose lives are divided between Amazon custom and the expectations of settled Greek communities.

As the Amazon host advances toward Athens, the novel reimagines the heroic legend as a clash between different systems of warfare, family and social organisation. The conflict tests Antiope's divided loyalties and explores how a remembered culture can survive only as myth after military defeat.
