In 1767, coal miner Mack McAsh challenges the system that binds Scottish miners to the land and brings him into conflict with the Jamisson family. Lizzie Hallim, intelligent and resistant to the expectations of her class, recognises the injustice of his position even as family pressure draws her toward a marriage connected to the mine owners.
Mack’s resistance carries him from Scotland to London and then to colonial Virginia, where transportation and indentured servitude reproduce old forms of coercion in a new setting. His relationship with Lizzie develops across class division, plantation society and the Atlantic frontier as both attempt to secure legal and personal independence.
