Georgian Empire and Atlantic World

1714–1837 CE

The Georgian British Empire and Atlantic world linked Britain and Ireland to North America, the Caribbean and West Africa through commerce, migration, naval power and warfare. Atlantic ports prospered from imperial trade, while plantation slavery and the trafficking of enslaved Africans formed a major part of the eighteenth-century economy.

The Seven Years’ War, the American Revolution and the wars with Revolutionary and Napoleonic France repeatedly altered Britain’s Atlantic position. Abolitionist campaigning led to the end of the British slave trade in 1807 and slavery in most of the empire in the 1830s, even as migration, settler expansion and maritime commerce continued to bind the Atlantic world together.
