Allan Mallinson

Allan Mallinson is a British author, military historian and former Army officer whose work draws extensively on his experience of cavalry service. During a military career of thirty-five years, he served in several countries and commanded a regiment of light dragoons. He began writing while still in the Army, initially producing military history before turning to historical fiction.

Mallinson is best known for the Matthew Hervey series, which follows a fictional British cavalry officer from the Battle of Waterloo through the imperial conflicts of the early nineteenth century. Beginning with A Close Run Thing, the novels combine military action with detailed accounts of regimental life, strategy and changing political loyalties. He has also written non-fiction studies of the British Army and the First World War, including The Making of the British Army and 1914: Fight the Good Fight.
