Rumours of War
Portugal, 1826. Newly returned from India, Hervey joins a British military mission sent to support the Portuguese regency during the succession crisis following João VI’s death. Court politics, constitutional rivalry and the threat of armed intervention suggest that Portugal may again become a European battleground.
The journey forces Hervey back over ground he first crossed as a seventeen-year-old cornet during Sir John Moore’s retreat to Corunna. Memories of hunger, exhaustion and the rear-guard battle intrude on the present mission, linking the coming Liberal conflict with the unresolved experience of the Peninsular War.
