Miguel I of Portugal

1802–1866

Miguel I was king of Portugal from 1828 to 1834 after overthrowing the constitutional settlement associated with his niece Maria II. His absolutist rule produced the Portuguese Liberal Wars, ending in his defeat, exile and the restoration of the constitutional monarchy.
