Peninsular War

1807–1814 CE

The Peninsular War was fought in Portugal, Spain and adjoining parts of France from 1807 to 1814. French occupation provoked Spanish resistance, while Britain supported Portugal and later Spanish forces with an army that developed under Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington.

The conflict combined conventional campaigning with sieges, local uprisings and guerrilla warfare that imposed a persistent burden on French armies. The Lines of Torres Vedras secured Portugal, allied victories gradually shifted the initiative, and the campaigns of 1813–1814 drove French forces across the Pyrenees into France.
