Southern France, late 1813. After Wellington’s victory at the Battle of Nivelle, Sharpe is ordered to protect Rear-Admiral Joel Chase while the naval officer examines how the army might bridge the rivers around Bayonne. Chase’s determination to witness the fighting turns the escort into a series of dangerous reconnaissances close to Marshal Soult’s lines.

The mission becomes caught up in the Battle of the Nive and the severe fighting at St Pierre, where a British division is endangered by broken communications and failed leadership. Sharpe must keep Chase alive, prevent a retreat and help hold the allied position during one of the bloodiest actions of the invasion of southern France.
