Immediately after Waterloo, Wellington sends Sharpe into Paris to investigate a Bonapartist organisation preparing revenge against the victorious allies. In the occupied city, Sharpe searches for a spy while a trained assassin closes on a political target. The mission forces him to distinguish between former enemies, unreliable allies and men determined to continue the war underground.
Paris after Waterloo is occupied but not politically settled. Bonapartists, allied soldiers and civilians all have reasons to conceal loyalties, making espionage more difficult than it was during open campaigning. Sharpe’s task is to identify a threat before revenge can turn military defeat into political murder, while deciding which former enemies are genuinely reconciled to the new order.
