Book
Sharpe’s Revenge
First published 1989
Sharpe fights at Toulouse in 1814, unaware that Napoleon has already abdicated and the Peninsular War is effectively ending. After the battle, Pierre Ducos frames him for stealing a fortune, destroying his reputation and turning former allies against him. Sharpe and Harper pursue the real thief across postwar Europe while Sharpe’s marriage collapses in his absence.
With the war apparently over, Sharpe cannot rely on the simple authority of the battlefield to clear his name. Ducos attacks reputation, money and marriage instead, forcing Sharpe to pursue justice through a Europe adjusting to Napoleon’s defeat. The story turns the end of one military career into a struggle over whether the enemies created by war can survive peace.
