India, 1799. Private Richard Sharpe is sent into Tipu Sultan’s fortress at Seringapatam disguised as a deserter so that he can contact a captured British agent. Inside the city, he must preserve his cover while uncovering a plan to destroy the attacking British army. When the assault begins, Sharpe is caught between Tipu’s troops and the soldiers who believe he has betrayed them.
The mission places Sharpe inside enemy territory before he has the rank or independence he will later acquire. Survival depends on deception, nerve and his ability to read both Tipu’s defenders and the British officers using him. The assault on Seringapatam then turns covert work into open battle, linking Sharpe’s personal escape with the East India Company’s destruction of Mysore’s resistance.
