During the retreat to Corunna in 1809, Sharpe and a group of riflemen are cut off from the British army and surrounded by French cavalry. His men distrust his authority and consider abandoning him, but an alliance with the Spanish officer Blas Vivar gives them a new purpose. Pursued across Galicia, they attempt to carry a sacred banner to Santiago de Compostela and provide the Spanish resistance with a public victory.
Sharpe’s problem is first one of command. The riflemen know him only as a recently promoted officer and have little reason to trust a man who came from the ranks. The journey with Vivar gives him a chance to establish authority through action, while the sacred banner turns a scattered group’s survival into part of the wider Spanish resistance to French occupation.
