Book
The Last Confederate
Sky and Rebekah Winslow leave Oregon City for a plantation in Virginia hoping to establish a settled family life. Instead they arrive as sectional crisis turns into the American Civil War, placing them among relatives and neighbours whose loyalties are divided between Union and Confederacy.
The move east forces the couple to confront a society shaped by slavery and by political assumptions very different from those of the Oregon frontier. As armies mobilise, family ties and religious conviction no longer provide simple answers. The novel follows the Winslows through the opening of war, showing how national division becomes a series of intimate choices about home, kinship and allegiance.
