During the German occupation of the Netherlands, Dr Gabrielle Winslow joins the underground effort to move Jews and other fugitives beyond Nazi control. Her work becomes dangerously personal when Colonel Erik Raeder, the German officer placed in authority over the area, turns out to be the man she nearly married before the war. Their shared past gives Raeder a reason to watch her closely at precisely the moment she has most to hide.

Gabrielle works with an American OSS agent on a mission to rescue her uncle from Germany, but the attempt leaves them at risk of being trapped in occupied Holland. The novel combines resistance activity, family loyalty and romantic conflict with the increasing danger faced by Dutch civilians who shelter fugitives or assist Allied intelligence.
