Peter and Phil Winslow arrive in New York at the beginning of the twentieth century with different ambitions. Peter is drawn to the dangerous new world of motor racing, while Phil studies art and tries to establish himself in a city where wealth, technology and culture are changing quickly. Their successes bring independence, but also relationships and choices that neither anticipated.

The novel places the cousins within Progressive Era America, when automobiles, mass entertainment and new artistic movements were altering urban life. Family expectations and religious conviction remain important to both men, but New York gives them opportunities to define themselves beyond inherited roles, forcing each to decide what success should actually mean.
