Book
The Union Belle
Mark Winslow is imprisoned after killing a man who attacked Lola Montez, and his escape leaves him with a reputation that follows him west. He eventually finds work connected with the Union Pacific, joining the enormous effort to push the railroad across the plains toward a meeting with the Central Pacific.
Railroad construction offers wages and a new beginning but also carries Mark into camps where gambling, violence and speculation grow as quickly as the track. His ability with a gun repeatedly threatens the lawful life he wants to build. The novel uses the first transcontinental railroad as the setting for a man trying to turn frontier skill into something more permanent than survival.
