Cassidy Winslow promises a dying man that he will escort the man’s daughter to the Klondike and help her search for gold. The commitment carries them north into the rush of 1896–99, where thousands of prospectors are moving toward remote diggings with little idea of the weather, transport problems or competition they will face.

Reaching the gold fields proves only the beginning. Claims must be located, defended and worked in a society built almost overnight from ambition and scarcity. Cassidy’s sense of obligation gradually becomes entangled with affection, while both travellers discover that the Klondike rewards endurance and judgement at least as much as luck. The novel treats the gold rush as migration as well as adventure.
