Retreat to Corunna
1808-12–1809-01
The Retreat to Corunna was the winter withdrawal of Sir John Moore’s British army across Galicia from December 1808 to January 1809. Napoleon’s rapid intervention in Spain threatened to cut off Moore after his advance toward the French communications, forcing a difficult march toward the Atlantic coast.
Cold, rain, poor roads, shortages and collapsing discipline caused severe hardship before the army reached Corunna. The retreat ended with the Battle of Corunna and the successful embarkation of the surviving British force, preserving the army for later campaigns in the Peninsula.
