During the Salamanca campaign of 1812, Sharpe is drawn into the hunt for a French intelligence officer whose network threatens the British army. The pursuit centres on a wounded British spy and a French colonel determined to silence him. After Sharpe is gravely injured, the conflict continues towards the Battle of Salamanca and a final attempt to prevent the enemy agent from escaping.

The French network threatens information rather than territory, and the wounded British agent becomes valuable because of what he knows. Sharpe’s own injuries force him to confront the limits of physical endurance while the wider army moves toward a battle in which accurate information and timing will prove decisive.
