Major Matthews returns to serve as aide to Sir Arthur Wellesley as British forces enter the Iberian campaign. Colonel Selkirk also uses him for intelligence work, forcing Matthews to watch supposed allies as carefully as French troops while the army advances through a political landscape in which Spanish and Portuguese cooperation cannot simply be assumed.

The campaign moves toward Talavera in 1809, where Wellesley’s army confronts a major French force and earns its commander the title Viscount Wellington.
