Regency Romances

Georgette Heyer’s Georgian and Regency romances are standalone novels rather than a continuous narrative, but they share a meticulously reconstructed social world of inheritance, marriage settlements, gambling, debt, travel, military service and aristocratic convention. Arranged here in publication order, the collection moves from the powdered fashions of the 1770s and 1790s into Regency Britain and the unsettled years surrounding Waterloo.

Heyer combines romantic comedy with road adventure, mystery, espionage, smuggling and domestic drama. Her plots often test the gap between public reputation and private character, using country houses, London drawing rooms, Bath assemblies, gaming clubs, coaching roads and provincial estates as stages for courtship and social negotiation.
