She finds the household constrained by debt, unsuitable engagements and the rigid authority of her cousin Charles Rivenhall, who expects Sophy to behave like a conventional young woman.

Sophy instead begins reorganising the family’s affairs, challenging a moneylender, discouraging a foolish romance and questioning Charles’s own engagement. Her practical interference creates chaos, but it also exposes the difference between social correctness and genuine judgement.
