Julia Golding

Julia Golding is a British author of historical adventure, fantasy and young-adult fiction. Born in 1969, she studied English at the University of Cambridge before joining the Foreign Office and serving in Poland. She later completed a doctorate in English Romantic literature at the University of Oxford and worked for Oxfam as a policy adviser on conflict and its effects on civilians. Golding has published more than sixty books and also writes under the names Joss Stirling and Eve Edwards.

Golding is particularly known for the Cat Royal series, which follows an orphan growing up around London’s Theatre Royal during the Georgian period. Its opening novel, The Diamond of Drury Lane, won both the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the Nestlé Children’s Book Prize in 2006. Her other historically based work includes the Jane Austen Investigates mysteries, the Darcie Lock wartime adventures and historical romances written as Eve Edwards. Her fiction combines accessible historical detail with mystery, travel and resourceful young protagonists, frequently placing girls and women at the centre of periods in which their choices were socially restricted.
