Georgian London

1714–1837 CE

Georgian London expanded rapidly as the capital of a growing commercial and imperial state. It contained royal parks, fashionable squares, theatres, pleasure gardens, docks, courts, prisons, markets and slums. Its streets brought aristocrats, servants, sailors, merchants, migrants and criminals into constant contact.

The city mattered because it concentrated power and danger in the same space. Wealth from trade and empire sat beside debt, prostitution, disease and harsh criminal law. London became a place where reputation could be made in a ballroom or destroyed in a courtroom.

Georgian London appears vividly in Antonia Hodgson’s Thomas Hawkins novels, Laura Shepherd-Robinson’s Blood & Sugar and Daughters of Night, Stacey Halls’s The Foundling, and Susan Stokes-Chapman’s Pandora. It also suits Regency fiction that moves beyond the ballroom into courts, alleys, prisons and docks. Series set here can combine crime, class mobility, scandal, medicine, publishing, theatre and political unrest.
