Louis XVIII of France

1755–1824

Louis XVIII was king of France after the fall of Napoleon, ruling during the Bourbon Restoration. His reign involved balancing royal authority, constitutional settlement and the divisions left by revolution, empire and occupation.

Louis XVIII of France also held the offices or ranks of duke, King of the French, French co-prince of Andorra, and Grand Master of the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem. Louis XVIII of France belonged to the House of Bourbon in France and operated within Kingdom of France. Louis XVIII of France was born in Palace of Versailles and died in Tuileries Palace.

Winston Graham’s Bella Poldark is set under the Bourbon Restoration, using the social and political atmosphere of 1818–1820 created by Louis XVIII’s restored monarchy as the background to the Poldarks’ next generation. Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables begins in the post-Napoleonic order established under Louis and carries the consequences of Restoration politics forward into the July Monarchy. Richard Woodman’s The Shadow of the Eagle depicts Louis directly in 1814 as he is escorted from English exile back to France after Napoleon’s first abdication. Graham’s The Twisted Sword places his government in immediate jeopardy when Napoleon returns from Elba and the Hundred Days force the Bourbons out of Paris again. C. S. HarrisWhen Blood Lies turns that same March 1815 collapse into the setting for Sebastian St Cyr’s investigation, with Louis’s regime disintegrating as divided loyalties and Napoleon’s advance transform a family murder case into a political danger.
