War
1812–1815 CE
The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and Britain from 1812 to 1815, with major campaigns along the Canadian frontier, the Great Lakes, the Atlantic coast and the Gulf of Mexico. Indigenous nations allied principally with Britain were central participants, particularly in the north-western theatre.
Neither side achieved all of its war aims. British forces burned public buildings in Washington in 1814, while American forces won important actions on the lakes and at New Orleans. The Treaty of Ghent restored peace largely on the pre-war territorial basis, although the conflict had lasting consequences for Indigenous power and national identity.
