The final Poldark novel follows Bella, Ross and Demelza’s youngest daughter, as her musical talent opens possibilities beyond the older Cornish world of mines, estates and family rivalries. The book also brings long-running family tensions, ambitions and attachments toward a late resolution.
Set from 1818 to 1820, the novel belongs to postwar Regency Britain rather than the battlefield years of the saga. Its historical interest lies in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars: changing manners, London cultural life, public performance, uneasy reform politics and the question of what the next generation inherits from Ross and Demelza’s world.
